CFS52: A Global Food Security Gathering in Rome: Taking Stock of the Right to Food

NOTE: The National Right to Food CoP's Global Linkages Right to Food Fellow, Photini Kamvisseli Suarez, is attending CFS52 in person to further grow our international partnerships and understand the NRtF CoP's role in the international right to food space. To hear more about this event, the CoP's global linkages, and international right to food efforts, please attend the International Linkages Working Group Meeting on Monday November 18th at 11:00 AM EST and contact Photini at photinirtf@gmail.com to be added to the International Linkages Working Group.

This week, the 52nd plenary session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS52) will take place at the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy. This year not only marks the 50th anniversary of CFS, but also 20 years of the Committee's endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the context of National Food Security. This creates an opportunity for CFS52 to serve as a period of reflection on the progress made since the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines, and an opportunity to confront the work still left to be done in achieving food security for all.

The event brings together right to food experts and advocates from around the globe, for a series of CFS plenary sessions and side events. Side events provide stakeholders and organizations with an opportunity to highlight more specific right to food related topics, including sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, climate action and food sustainability, public policy approaches, biodiversity, the right to water, women’s rights, peasant’s rights, Indigenous rights, and more.

The event will take place in a hybrid format, allowing stakeholders to tune in virtually from around the world.
